PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release Date: 1/25/08 Contact: Kim Cooper, Coeur d’Alene Association of REALTORS® Phone: 208-664-9221 Email: Kim@KimCooper.com
REALTORS® REACH AGREEMENT WITH ASSESSOR The Coeur d’Alene Association of REALTORS® announced that it has reached a data sharing agreement with the Kootenai County Assessor. The Agreement will be signed in a ceremony at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2007. The data share agreement eliminates the necessity of a proposed Sale Price Disclosure Ordinance that would have required disclosure of the sales price paid in nearly every property transaction in Kootenai County.
This agreement keeps the reporting of sales price data by buyers and sellers voluntary while assisting the Assessor in properly assessing values. Under the new agreement the Assessor is given the same limited access commonly given to private appraisers.
The association retains ownership and all rights to that data and is granting the Assessor limited access to assist the Assessor in determining the value of properties within the County. Without this access, it is feasible that the taxpayers would face increased taxes to fund additional personnel for the Assessor’s office. The beautiful thing about this agreement is that it is a private enterprise solution to a problem.
Peter Smith, the attorney for the Association, believes that sales price disclosure leads to taxation. “Though the proposed ordinance expressly stated the information collected could not be used as a basis for a real estate transfer or excise tax, sales price disclosure is one step away from a real estate transfer or excise tax. This agreement avoids taking a step toward more taxation.” | |
